Photo Editing Programs and Digital Scrapbooking

In the post about Digital Scrapbooking software, I shared links and information about 3 very affordable, Digital Scrapbooking specific programs.  These programs are awesome and for many, they do everything you would want to do.

A lot of people though, who love digital scrapbooking, use Photo Editing Software to make their layouts.  These tend to be a bit more pricey, but then they also give you more creative ability.  The other side, is that they also all come with a bit of a learning curve.  There are many different options when looking at photo editing software.  There are free versions all the way up to the Grand Daddy of them all, Photoshop!  In this post, I am just going to focus on 3.

Most of them have a 30 day FREE trial period, where you can download the product and try it out for 30 days.  When I was first starting out this is what I did.  I tried, out a couple programs, working with only one at time, and then made the decision of which program I wanted to go with.  Each program will have tutorials on their websites, but the problem with most of these, is that they are geared to Photo Editing, and not Digital Scrapbooking.  So I am going to post some links below for a few sites I have found that offer FREE program specific, Digital Scrapbooking tutorials.

Here are the programs I am focusing on:

GIMP, (which is actually a FREE photo editing program).  You can find GIMP here if you would like to check it out.

Here is link for free digital scrapbooking tutorials, using GIMP

Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is a great program with a lot of great features.  You can find a link here to purchase, or download a free trial.

Here is a link for free digital scrapbooking tutorials, using Photoshop Elements:

Paint Shop Pro, is the first photo editing program I tried.  It is also a great program, with tons of great features.  I have many designer friends who use it and love it.  You can find a link here to purchase or download a free trial.

Here is a link for free digital scrapbooking tutorials using Paint Shop Pro
There are lots of classes and tutorials out there that you can sign up for. Just google for them.  I came across tons, but I’m not going to link them to this page, just because I haven’t personally taken any of them and I don’t know how they are.
The most important thing is to just jump in and have fun.  Once you get some basics down of how your program works, you will learn the most, just by playing with it.  So jump in and have some fun! 😉
If you find some good tutorials and would like to share, feel free to add links in the comments.  🙂

*NOTE:  Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro can be purchased from a lot of different places.  I purchased both of mine from Amazon.  If you do the Free trial from the company, you don’t have to purchase the program from them.  Shop around for the best deal! 🙂

Summer Carnival

Today, I would like to highlight, my Summer Carnival collection.  The basic combo pack contains 12 digital 12x12inch papers, and 29 page elements.  You can purchase it as a combo pack, or separately if you just want the paper pack or the elements pack.  My wonderful Creative team, as taken this set and made 2 border sets, a cluster set, paper stacks, quick pages, book marks, and a facebook cover!!

As a kid, I had the opportunity to live in a small town in Middle Tennessee for 3 years.  This kit was inspired by the wonderful memories I have of the County Fair that took place every August.  It was definitely a magical place!   The kit is perfect for scrapping any of your special trips to the fair, a visiting carnival or an amusement park, or even a trip to the circus.  It would also work great for scrapping carnival/circus themed birthday parties!  Click here to find the whole collection.

29 elements included in the combo pack, or available separately.
12 full-size papers, included in the combo pack or available separately.

Gathering and Organizing Photos to Scrap…

In this age of digital cameras, and phone cameras, I’m sure that you already have loads of pictures to scrap, but what about all those old photos stored away in boxes.  If you are to work with older photos, you will have to scan them on to your computer.  There are all kinds of ways to do that now.  I’ve even seen apps to use your phone to “scan” them.

It would save you a lot of frustration and time later on, if you would take some time to get your photos organized.   There are tons of ways to do this.  There really isn’t one proper way…just do what makes sense to you.

You may want to save them by year, and then by month…or by who is in them… or by where they are from… or by event… See I told you the possibilities are endless, so just do what seems the most logical to you.

I have my photos saved onto an external hard drive, but because I don’t want to have to go back and forth when I’m scrapping, I also have a file on my computer desk top, labeled, “photos to scrap”.  It only contains a few folders of photos that I am working with at the moment.

Getting things organized is an area that I really need to work on.  So it is on my “to do list” for the near future! 😉

One more note… there really is no “fail proof” safe way to make sure your photos are always safe.  For that reason, I recommend, external hard drives, memory cards, flash drives,  and internet storage.  If your computer crashes, you have them saved in other places… If your hard drive crashes, you have back-ups.  Nothing lasts forever.  It is super important to also print some of your favorite photos.  I read something the other day, that really made me stop and think.  It said, “The most photographed generation, will have nothing to show for it, 50 years from now!”

Ok, have fun, looking through all those photos and all the memories they bring back and get them organized!

I would love to hear any of your tips or ideas for organizing your photos!

Digital Scrapbooking Software

For me, starting out, finding software, was a major issue.  I didn’t know where to even start looking.  There are so many different options and they all have their pros and cons.  I can’t even begin to share all the different options.

If you are just starting out, (which I am going to assume you are, if you are looking for Scrapbooking Software), here are 3 options that have been awarded some high marks.

My Memories Suite 9, is compatible with both Mac and PC. It comes with 465 free kits – a wide range of templates and embellishments to start off your scrapbooking projects. Additionally, there are over 20,000 kits available for purchase on the company’s website if you want more options for an everyday theme or special occasion. Our testers agreed that MyMemories offers quality designs that look modern and are varied enough to work for many different occasions. This software allows you to work with different page sizes so you can determine how large or small you want the scrapbook to be. However, you cannot add videos, links or music to your albums. -from

It is a very easy to learn program that actually will surprise you at all it can do. I feel that it is a great product for the price, and You can even use the coupon code posted here and get $10 off your purchase!! (I just love great deals!!) Coupon code: STMMMS13734 (just copy and paste it at the check out)There are also lots of great tutorials that are easy to follow.  My Memories Suite 9, gets the “Best Overall Award”.

Memory Mixer 4 is designed for both Mac and PC. It gives you a lot of tools and convenience for your money. It comes with 236 kits installed on the program, but you can find 9,000 additional kits for purchase on the company’s website. According to our testers, this program had the best template and embellishment designs of any other program we tested. You will find that these designs are stylish, modern and provided a wide range of color themes. This program doesn’t offer any paintbrush tools or text effects, so you cannot create your own graphics. This is the only software that allows you to add video and links to your digital scrapbooks as well as music. -from

Memory Mixer 4 was given the “Best Budget Award” in the review.

iScrapbook is a great option designed specifically for Mac. It will seem very pared down next to MyMemories in most ways. It has a much smaller selection of included kits, and while the online store offers more than 1,500 purchasable kits, it is still less than what many other companies offer. However, the graphics that you do have access to are very impressive, and this software makes it easy to share your projects on social media. This program is the only one that provides typography tools so you can add plenty of text effects to your projects like kerning, or placing text on a curve.

iScrapbook was given the “Best for Mac Award”  in the review.
The only one of these programs that I have had experience with is MyMemories Suite.  When you use the $10 off coupon, it ends up being the same price as the Memory Mixer 4 software!!  So In my book that wins it “Best All Around” and “Best Budget”!
These are just 3 of the many, many options out there.  If you are interested in some more in depth reading, you can check out this article on Top Ten Reviews. (and no, I’m not being paid anything by that website!)
